HOW TO GROW CUCUMBERS

The nutrient solution used for any hydroponic technique is made up of various chemicals which consists of essential nutrients like N, P, K and Ca etc required for plant growth. However, plants need different proportion of nutrients during respective stages of development. The following table shows the appropriate amount of chemicals to use for different growing stages.

Weight Of Nutrient Chemicals Required For The Vegetative & Reproductive Stages Of Cucumber Plants

 Nutrient Chemical Vegetable State Reproductive Stage
Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate 260g 233g
Calcium Nitrate 1180g 826g
Potassium Nitrate 220g 225g
Magnesium Sulphate 615g 615g
EDTA Iron 131g 131g
Manganous Sulphate 6.1g 6.1g
Boric Acid 5.6g 5.6g
Copper Sulphate 0.4g 0.4g
Ammonium Molybdate 0.4g 0.4g
Zinc Sulphate 4.4g 4.4g
Silica 30g 30g

The nutrients should be prepared as two concentrates.
Nutrient solution A consists of Calcium Nitrate and ETA iron only.
The remaining nutrient chemicals make up solution B.

The above table shows the amount of nutrient chemicals needed to prepare 1000 liters of solution. Calcium sulphate is eliminated in this case because precipitation will occur. Therefore calcium nitrate is used instead.

The table below shows the formulated concentration of elements in 1000 liters of nutrient solution.

Ideal Concentration Of Elements For The Vegetative & Reproductive Stages Of Cucumber Plants

 Elements Vegetable State Reproductive Stage
N 251 ppm 225 ppm
P 70 ppm 60 ppm
K 220 ppm 280 ppm
Ca 200 ppm 140 ppm
Mg 60 ppm 60 ppm
Fe 20 ppm 20 ppm
Mn 2.0 ppm 2.0 ppm
B 1.0 ppm 1.0 ppm
Cu 0.1 ppm 0.1 ppm
Mo 0.2 ppm 0.2 ppm
Zn 1.0 ppm 1.0 ppm

During Vegetative Stage    --> N:K > 1
During Reproductive Stage --> N:K < 1
